<p><font size=+1>Phase One &#8211; Induction</font>: You cut carbohydrate intake to 2/3oz or 20g per day.  This is the stage at which you lose the most weight (usually up to 15lbs in the initial two weeks&#8230; sometimes more).  You stay in phase one for a minimum of two weeks but you may choose to remain at phase one for longer (particularly if you have a large amount of weight to lose).  It should be noted that in this phase dizziness and fainting can be an issue.  This is because when your body runs out of carbohydrates and has to switch to burning fat and the energy is not as instant so you may experience these symptoms while the switch over occurs.  </p>
<p><font size=+1>Phase two &#8211; ongoing weight loss</font>: You may increase your DAILY carbohydrate intake by 1/6oz or 5g and stay at that level for one to two weeks before increasing again.  Weight loss slows slightly at this stage and therefore the side effects of dizziness and weakness reduce in frequency.  During this stage you may begin to find your &#8216;carbohydrate level for losing&#8217; or CLL.  This is the quantity of carbohydrates you can consume and still lose weight.  In phase two you typically increase your carbohydrates till you&#8217;re losing one pound per week.  Then you remain at that level till you&#8217;re 10lbs from your goal weight at which point you progress to phase three.</p>
<p><font size=+1>Phase three &#8211; Pre-maintenance</font>:  You&#8217;ll increase your daily carbohydrate  intake by 2/3oz or 10g and remain at that level for up to two weeks before increasing daily carbohydrates again by the same amount.  </p>
<p><font size=+1>Phase four &#8211; lifetime maintenance</font>: Begins once you have achieved your goal weight.  At this time you will have discovered what your Atkins carbohydrate equilibrium (or ACE) is.  Your ACE is the quantity of carbohydrates you&#8217;ll be able to consume without gaining OR losing weight. Some individuals experience positive effects while others experience negative effects, and in some cases individuals can experience both positive and negative effects. With many vocal supporters and equally vocal antagonists, one could be forgiven for feeling somewhat confused over the whole issue.</p>
<p>It is not a difficult task to find weight loss success stories from those who have used the Atkins diet successfully.  The media and internet are full of such stories.  This indicates that the Atkins diet is a viable, effective, fat burning diet.  Recent scientific research has indicated much potential in the Atkins diet as a fat burning diet for those who wish to use it.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, not all arguments in the Atkins diet controversy are positive.  For all the success stories, organizations such as the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) and AMA (American Medical Association) continue to question whether the Atkins diet is healthy or damaging to those who engage in it.  These arguments require further research in order to be resolved.  However, the Atkins diet has certainly offered some valuable insights into what makes a person lose weight and nobody is disputing this.  Any overweight person would welcome, with open arms, the opportunity to lose the amount of weight that the Atkins diet proffers.</p>
<p>One of the best aspects of the Atkins diet is that forces your body to burn fat cells for energy requirements by reducing carbohydrate consumption which is the body&#8217;s natural source of most of it&#8217;s immediate energy needs. </p>
<p>Of course, there are new diets coming out constantly, some of which work and some of which don&#8217;t work.  These diets seek to replace more traditional diets that are proven to be effective for those who use them.  And the Atkins diet is no exception.  It is constantly being compared to other weight loss plans being touted by those who want to take it&#8217;s place.</p>
<p>The Atkins diet focuses around the consumption of meat rather than carbohydrates.  The protein in meat and other high protein foods such as eggs, helps to create a feeling of having our appetite satisfied.  This effectively stops us from overeating.  In addition, protein requires significantly more energy to digest than carbohydrates.  This is an example only, but say for argument sake that it takes 15% of the calorie intake from carbohydrates to digest it, with protein that figure is more like 25% because the body has to work harder to digest protein.</p>
<p>One of the arguments behind the Atkins diet controversy regards the risk of people engaging in the diet without getting the full information on it and making mistakes that are detrimental to their health. While the Atkins diet may not be right for everyone there are plenty of reasons to listen to the Atkins diet controversy.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Since it&#8217;s inception in 1972, the Atkins diet has been the center of much debate.  The Atkins diet controversy stems mostly from the fact that the diet ignores accepted nutritional norms and is seen as appealing to humanity&#8217;s baser habits of over indulging on unhealthy foods.  Many authorities feel that the diet is destructive and will destroy the health of those who engage in it.</p>
<p>The most common question about the Atkins diet is whether it is healthy for people.  Supporters of the diet claim it is an excellent way to lose weight and increase overall health.  They cite frequent results such as the ability to lose 10 pounds in the first week and claim that this slowly increases over time, especially in conjunction with exercise and supplements.  Furthermore, they aver that by following the diet they are able to enjoy meat and other fatty foods more frequently.</p>
<p>The diet has some high profile critics, including: the US food and drug administration (FDA) and The American Medical Association (AMA).  Although the diet promotes an increase in the consumption of meat in order to provide the protein for muscle growth. Critics claim that the weight loss associated with the Atkins diet is caused by a combination of fluid and lean muscle loss which doesn&#8217;t help with fat loss. The loss of lean muscle is never good, especially in those who need to lose weight.  Furthermore, they claim that losing 10 pound in one week is physically damaging to a person&#8217;s health.  It is believed by critics to be the supplements and exercise rather than the actual diet that assists with weight loss.</p>
<p>Apart from concerns about the effect of such rapid weight loss, critics are also concerned about people engaging in the Atkins diet without understanding it and especially, without seeking medical advice.  There is also the risk of underlying reasons for being overweight existing, or there may be health problems that make dieting a risky proposition.  For example, if a person is a diabetic and doesn&#8217;t know it, the sudden reduction in carbohydrates caused by the Atkins diet could cause them to go into a coma or even die.  While this is an extreme example, the majority of people who have participated in the Atkins diet report suffering from dizziness and light headedness by day three or four.  These symptoms sometimes even result in physical collapse or loss of consciousness.  </p>
<p>There is a very good reason for this.  The Atkins diet is an extremely low carbohydrate diet.  Carbohydrates provide the source of fuel to the body, and they provide it almost instantaneously.  When you restrict carbohydrate intake, your body must convert either fat or protein into carbohydrates then into energy. As you can imagine, this takes longer so the energy isn&#8217;t instant.  If you engage in a sudden period of intense activity, your energy levels can run out and that is when these symptoms occur.  While a body with no underlying health issues can cope with this, a body with medical conditions such as diabetes will not cope well at all.  As you can see, it is not a good idea to start a weight loss plan without first consulting with your doctor. </p>
<p>The general consensus on both sides of the debate is that the Atkins diet does acheive results.  However, critics believe that the risks outweigh potential benefits.  There is growing scientific evidence to suggest that the diet may have some true benefits.    </p>
<p>Despite potential benefits, the risks will always deter some people. Ultimately, you are the only person who can make the decision of whether the Atkins diet could be the solution you are seeking and you can&#8217;t always allow others to make your choices for you.</p>
<p>Certainly, as long as the Atkins diet has it&#8217;s protagonists (supporters), it will also have it&#8217;s antagonists and the Atkins diet controversy will probably rage for many years.</p>

This mistaken belief (and action) can lead to the individual suffering from malnutrition and doing more harm than good.</p>
<p>Another misconceptions regarding the Atkins diet results from dieters not recognizing the need for almost daily exercise in order to achieve maximum results from the diet. Quite simply, the Atkin&#8217;s diet will not work without vitamins and regular exercise. If you don&#8217;t have these you can cause yourself more harm so it is important to understand how the Atkin&#8217;s diet works. </p>
<p>There is a tremendous amount of information available online regarding the Atkins diet, many individuals mistakenly assume this information has come directly from the official Atkins diet plan. <p>Of course, there is a huge amount of controversy regarding the Atkins diet.  The American Medical Association and many expert nutritionists question whether the Atkins diet is healthy and whether or not those who follow it will actually lose weight.  While it&#8217;s true that body types and nutritional requirements differ from person to person and that means that for some, the Atkins diet may not work.  But the evidence is there when you examine those people who conscientiously follow this diet, both in terms of weight and  health due to healthier eating habits.</p>
<p>Many people who decide to use this diet plan their daily routine according to regular meal times (ie. breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner.)  The essence of the Atkins diet is not eating less, but rather monitoring and controlling your nutrient intake.  The Atkins diet recipes are frequently broken down into the following groups; Appetizers, Entree (first course), main course, beverages, grains and breads and dessert.</p>

<p><u><em><strong>Atkins Diet Recipe #1</strong></em></u><br />
<font size=+1>Mushroom and Cheese breakfast Omelette</font></p>
<ul>
<li>1/2 oz butter</li>
<li>1/4 cup sliced mushrooms</li>
<li>1/8 cup red onion &#8211; chopped</li>
<li>2 chopped garlic cloves</li>
<li>mustard, thyme, salt and pepper to taste</li>
<li>3 eggs</li>
<li>1/8 cup parsley</li>
<li>1/3 cup shredded Mozzarella cheese</li>
</ul>
<p>Melt some butter in a frypan over medium heat and make sure it spreads evenly. Add mushrooms, onion, garlic and thyme. Saute for four minutes, stir in mustard add salt and pepper to taste.  Remove from heat.</p>
<p>Beat eggs in a bowl, add parsley and half the cheese, stir till mixed. Melt some butter in a frying pan over medium heat, add the egg mixture. Make sure the inside base of the pan is covered with egg mixture. Lift the omelet with a spatula periodically to allow uncooked egg to run under and to avoid sticking.</p>
<p>Top the omelet with the mushroom mix and the rest of the mozzarella. Enjoy! </p>
<p><u><em><strong>Atkins Diet Recipe #2</strong></em></u><br />
<font size=+1>BLT Salad</font></p>
<p>Ingredients:</p>
<ul>
<li>7 slices bacon &#8211; cooked crisp,drained and crumbled</li>
<li>1 cup chopped lettuce</li>
<li>1/8 cup chopped onion</li>
<li>1/2 tomato chopped </li>
<li>1 tablespoon mayonnaise</li>
</ul>
<p>Method:<br />
Place tomato, lettuce and onion in a bowl and stir in mayonaise till evenly coated then add bacon. </p>
<p><u><em><strong>Atkins Diet Recipe #3</strong></em></u><br />
<font size=+1>Baked Almond Chicken (Entree)</font></p>
<ul>
<li>6 skinless chicken breast fillets</li>
<li>1 cup whipping cream</li>
<li>1 tsp celery salt</li>
<li>1 tsp paprika</li>
<li>½ tsp seasoned salt</li>
<li>1 tsp curry powder</li>
<li>¼ tsp pepper</li>
<li>¼ tsp almond extract</li>
<li>½ cup sliced or slivered toasted almonds</li>
</ul>
<p><font color=red>Note: tsp is short for teaspoon.</font></p>
<p>Arrange chicken in a greased baking dish.<br />
Mix cream and seasonings together.<br />
Pour cream mixture over and around chicken.<br />
Bake uncovered, at 350F (190C) for 45 minutes.<br />
Sprinkle almonds over the top.<br />
Bake uncovered, for 5-8 minutes or until golden brown.</p>
<p><u><em><strong>Atkins Diet Recipe #4</strong></em></u><br />
<font size=+1>Egg Nog</font></p>
<p>Ingredients:</p>
<ul>
<li>1 egg (or 2oz egg substitute)</li>
<li>Granular sugar substitute to taste</li>
<li>1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract</li>
<li>1 cup full cream milk</li>
<li>1/4 cup dark rum or brandy (optional)</li>
<li>Cinnamon or nutmeg</li>
</ul>
<p>Method:</p>
<p>Beat egg and sugar substitute together in a bowl. Add vanilla, milk and rum or brandy (if using); mix thoroughly. Sprinkle top with cinnamon or nutmeg.</p>
<p><font color=red>Note: 1 or two teaspoons of Rum or Brandy essence can be used in place of alcohol for flavor</font></p>
