Humans have been using ‘food additives’ for centuries, spices to add flavor, sugar, salt and vinegar to preserve. But since the 1970’s food additives have become much more common in our food. Our busy modern day lives make us turn to processed foods which use food additives to enhance the look and flavor of food and increase shelf life. But do these additives really improve your food? Sure, they improve flavor and shelf life etc, but at what cost. Food additives have been linked to many common health issues. The number of people having these health issues has increased rapidly over the last 40 years in direct relation to the increase of food additives in our diets. Yet food companies continue to deny that these chemicals are harmful to our health. The truth is that there are many food additives to avoid.
These chemicals, some man made and some 100% natural, are added to foods to improve the look, flavor and shelf life of products . But how do we know what effect they have on our health and why do the products have such a long shelf life?
A normal American household spends about 90 percent of their food budget on processed foods, and in doing so are exposed to a huge number of food additives, many of which have serious side effects on health.
And the sad truth is that you can’t even trust so called 100% natural foods. Many companies label their products as 100% natural to make them sound healthy. But that doesn’t mean they are safe. there are many natural compounds and chemicals that are not healthy for us. Arsenic is 100% natural, but you’ll get very ill if you eat it. Sugar is 100% natural, but if you eat too much of it you will gain weight. Saturated fat is natural but too much of it will clog your arteries etc. So there are even natural food additives to avoid.
Some food additives are worse than others. In the list below, if the text is a link then click to read posts and be sure to check back as I will be adding a post of each item.
